Anyone knows how to control the IRdA port directly in Win95/98? With direct control, we can control/receive RCX and other IR devices directly without using the tower. (26 years ago, 17-Nov-98, to lugnet.robotics)

(...) Short answer -- the IR protocol used by the RCX is more akin to that used in TV remotes than it is to the IrDA standard. If you could talk to your IR port directly, you could probably do that.
