If you haven't done so, start by reading "Where am I? Sensors and methods for Mobile Robot Positioning" by J. Borenstein that is available free:
http://www-personal.engin.umich.edu/~johannb/position.htm
You will find very usefull information about sensors, odometry, evironment mapping and many other ideas.
