1) Has anyone actually gotten two RCXs to communicate reliably via IR?
(LNP folk (if there actually are any) are solicited here!)

I should have clarified on this one: in LegOS :) Windows is, for better or
for worse, not an option.

2) What about other forms of communications? I know several people have
used two RCXs to construct bots of various forms- have they communicated
in any way? Or have they operated independently?

-Besides the built-in "message" function, there are several other ways
RCXs could communicate.  RCX A could shine a light into RCX B's light
sensor.  RCX A could start a motor that would tap RCX B's touch sensor.

I was thinking of this. I wondered (more for curiousity's sake) whether
or not this has actually been done.

For an extreme example, RCX A could run a motor, monitor its rotation with
a rotation sensor also connected to RCX A, and have another rotation
sensor, connected to RCX B, on the same axle.  It would certainly be an
interesting way to transmit data.

Hmm... That would be a really interesting one... rotation sensors will
also be in plentiful supply.

3) The big one: What would you do with six RCXs?

-Me personally?  My interest would be purely software: Develop a
protocol to allow any two RCXs in the group to transmit arbitrary strings
of bytes to each other unambiguously, without the others getting confused.

That was what the LNP (LegOS Network Protocol, which I guess was discussed
on the LegOS list) supposedly had as a goal. I'm afraid that it appears to
have died. I may get back into it, I suppose, but I have to focus on other
stuff at the moment and have absolutely zero messaging protocol
experience.
