Let's assume it is the LEGO rotation sensor.  Which is not an 8-bit sensor.  It
is an incremental encoder that sends values back as 4 analog values.  If a
touch sensor is put in parallel with a rotation sensor the analog values would
get messed up and the RCX will not see movement or maybe even false movement.

Perhaps I've misunderstood how that angle sensor works. I was under the
impression it was a simple pot (ie analog), are you saying it is actualy
some sort of R-ladder that is switched depending on the angle (ie perhaps
with a ring-slider mechanism)?

Either way, it's a 9V sensor whether the RIS thinks it's a rotation sensor or
a 8-level photo-detector seems dependent on how one interprets the signal.
Personaly, and I've played with mine only a few hours total - I've got the bot
working and need to make a table and hook it to the Linux box. But I'd say
most of the sensors seem usable using 3-bit alone.

It's also feasible to use steering diodes to allow multiple switch sensors on
one detector, each assigned a specific voltage.

If Lego had made the bump switches DPDT instead of SPST there would be a lot
more things you could do with it as well (e.g. external switching via those
contacts). Gee, I wonder if that little micro-switch in there comes in a DPDT
style of the same format?

Somebody said something in one of the exchanges about not altering the Lego.
Personaly that's one of the reasons I own a Dremel and a soldering iron.

I also have no compunction against inserting additional signal processing
in/on the connection wire.
