As it turns out, I just started on a project like that. I intentionally
went out of my way to avoid using the letters N, X, & T right NeXT to each
other.
My totally unofficial opinion would be something like this. Theres not
much TLG can say about code you write for yourself. But, if youre sharing
that code, it could easily look like LEGO officially endorces it, if its
called NXT.NET or something like that. In which case, they may ask you to
change the name. Just avoid that, by using another name.

Steve, do you think TLG would object to leJOS NeXT? Legally I it should be
okay, since I dont think people can trademark a common word like Next.
Im not sure if capitalization of letters matters with regards to trademarks
though.
Someone in our group also mentioned that Steve Jobs defunct operating system
was called NeXT. As far as I know, thats dead now so he couldnt object to
it, but maybe someone has a more informed view on this.

NeXT Software was the company, NeXTcube and NeXTstation were the two machines,
and NeXTSTEP was the OS. After Apple acquired NeXT (its more the other way
around, actually), a lot of the NeXTSTEP features carried over into Mac OS X,
such as the Dock and processor-independent code (which is why Apple has been
able to switch to Intel CPUs so easily).
A couple years ago I thought of buying a NeXTstation just to have one.
