IR Port as Proximity detector. —David Chen
Someone (Can't remember who, so unfortunately unable to give credit for the idea appropriately) posted the fact that the IR port used as a emitter coupled with the Light Sensor unit as the reciever can be used as a IR proximity sensor. Seemed like a (...) (26 years ago, 8-Jan-99, to lugnet.robotics)

Oops, noticed a coding error, the line that says: level = Input(1); Should read: level = IN_2; For better readability. The original version works b/c IN_2 is #defined already as Input(1); but the latter is more readable. I have used this (...) (26 years ago, 8-Jan-99, to lugnet.robotics)

Re: IR Port as Proximity detector. —Michael Gasperi
(...) You are only making IR light with the transmitter, why do you send the value of level? Why not just a constant? (26 years ago, 8-Jan-99, to lugnet.robotics)

Re: IR Port as Proximity detector. —David Chen
(...) Agreed, I could have sent OhFF or any number for that matter. Sending the read light level was a legacy of my early debugging code in which I was using RcxCC's live monitoring feature to see what values were being read to establish my (...)         IR Port as night/day detector (Was: Re: IR Port as Proximity detector.) —Daniel McCarty
Pardon my newbieness. This is my first post here and I'm still saving up to buy a MindStorms set. I was wondering if the IR port on the RCX can be used to determine if it's night or day out without using the light sensor. Are IR readings of (...) (26 years ago, 14-Jan-99, to lugnet.robotics)

Re: IR Port as night/day detector (Was: Re: IR Port as Proximity detector.) —Laurentino Martins
(...) I though the RCX had a internal clock. I don't have a RCX so I can not tell. The CyberMaster doesn't. Laurentino Martins *<||:-) [mailto:lau@mail.telepac.pt] [(URL) you check the web site first?: (URL) (26 years ago, 14-Jan-99, to lugnet.robotics)

Re: IR Port as night/day detector (Was: Re: IR Port as Proximity detector.) —John A. Tamplin
(...) Not a time of day clock, but you have the materials to do your own once you tell it what time it is. This would probably require you to use something like legOS. John A.         Re: IR Port as night/day detector (Was: Re: IR Port as Proximity detector.) —Laurentino Martins
(...) How's that? The SDK has the function SetWatch( Hours, Min ). Also, in page 47 (printed page 45) we can read in the table that the source 14-0 : "RCX. Watch. Integer where MSB=hours and LSB=minutes" If this isn't a time of day clock, tell me (...) (26 years ago, 14-Jan-99, to lugnet.robotics)

RE: IR Port as night/day detector (Was: Re: IR Port as Proximity detector.) —Tilman Sporkert
(...) Yes, it's a time of day clock, but you still need to tell it what time it is after turning it on. The clock only runs while the RCX is powered up. If you turn it off and on for whatever reason, the clock starts with 00:00. Tilman -- Did you (...) (26 years ago, 14-Jan-99, to lugnet.robotics)

Re: IR Port as night/day detector (Was: Re: IR Port as Proximity detector.) —John A. Tamplin
(...) The RCX hardware does not have a time of day clock. I haven't fooled with the standard RCX bytecode interpreter, so I wasn't aware that it implemented one in software, but it is doing just what I said you could do -- you get the initial (...)         Re: IR Port as night/day detector (Was: Re: IR Port as Proximity detector.) —Daniel McCarty
(...) Sorry, maybe I didn't explain it very well. I don't necessarily need a clock to tell the time. What I want to do is turn on a light based on a reading from the IR port. Is this possible without using the light sensor? Thanks, Daniel. (26 years ago, 15-Jan-99, to lugnet.robotics)
