While the 9V connector is cheap - I am quite happy to go with simple
In-Line 2 pin connectors (IDC) - they are small, and cheap and have a
fairly neat finish. The PP3 battery connectors would be somewhat bulky
and look a little clumsy. Plus this would mean you could connect it
easily to PCBs and other microcontrollers, or Servos which use a
three pin of teh same type.

I am trying to find a suitable connector that will let me cut up and extend
the
regular mindstorm wires, as well as to connect to custom built sensors.

Ive done some more digging and asking around... Seems what I was
looking for is referred to as a hermaphroditic connector.
One big maker is Anderson, who make an extremely overrated (voltage
and current) connector called the Powerpole
http://www.andersonpower.com/products/pp/sp.html that seems pretty
popular with the 12V radio crowd (
http://home.comcast.net/~buck0/app.htm ). They are a little heavy
dury for this purpose...so they are a little big, too, but look like a
great design.
Another suggestion made to me was to use standard 9V clip connectors
like this http://www.amqrp.org/kits/NCKeyer/elmer/P7190015a.jpg which
seems like a great idea! Right voltage rating, solid mechanical
connection and readily available! Ill have to see if I can find a
good source of these without the wires, cheap :)

I did finally discover a two pole version of the automotive hermaphroditic
connector:
But realize it is physically way too big :(
I dont like the IDC connector as it is ended I.E. there is a male and a
female version... but this might be the best way to go.
One thing I want to try still is to make my own hermaphroditic connectors. Im
thinking of using a standard DB socket connector with heat shrink around it next
to a standard DB pin connector (exposed) with the two head next to each other by
another piece of heat shrink. Otherwise Ill just end up with the IDC...
