I beg to differ. The origninal technic motor was ungeared. It was bad because
the first thing it did was try to power unlubed high friction gears.
At least with enclosed, lubed close tolerance gears, there's a lot less friction
in the gear train. And for most kids, drive wheels are what they're trying to
drive and a 5000 rpm motor reqires way too much work to make the wheels turn and
way too much friction loss.
Nothing says you can't use your old ungeared Technic motor though, if you need
higher rpm.

| The problem with gearing down motors in order to exchange RPM for torque is that if you actually NEED RPM rather than torque then you have to gear them back up again. If you have a high RPM motor to start with, you have to gear it down in order to (...) (19 years ago, 9-Jan-06, to lugnet.robotics)
