Hello,

Q2. What is the best way to make a lego compatible connector?  Seems to me one
could maybe use small screws the size of studs or something...

http://news.lugnet.com/robotics/ has links to some pages which have ideas for
connectors. Personally, I've had good luck with 4-40 machine screws, 3/4" long.

As for the wire- you might take a sample with you to an electronics store (not
Radio Shack- they probably don't have it) in your town and see what they can do
for you.

Hello Tim,

In what way did you use the machine screws?  Did they replace studs say on a 2x2
brick? were you abel to stick them up inside the stud?  Any pics or further
instructions?

I'm in serious doubt aboutmy skill of crafting a function *and* asthetically
pleasing replacement connector.

For longer wires running under siplays and such, currently I am thinking I'll
just use lego wires cut and am leaning towards either .... something like a 3.5
mm connector typically used for audio applcations.  I have considered phone or
CAT five wire (I have the crimper and have done some phone wiring in the past),
or possibly the "molex" (?) type connector.  I found some online that the had
the handy locking clip on them.  looks like you need a crimper to work with them
and they looked a littel expensive.. (I didn't shop much).

For internal applications -- thinking of LEDs for train lighting... even the existing connectors are a bit limiting... pretty much all black and unless you take it apaart can't feed it through say a technic hole-- though not sure what connector would allow that.   Internal apps I imagine will be... pretty customized and not probably very modular as a result.

I've looked at some of those links and will study them in more depth. Thanks for
the suggestion.

(...) Right- I shaved off two of the studs with a paring knife (opposite corners), then the screws just twisted right in. I said 3/4" before, but that's too long. Maybe 1/2-inch? Take a brick with you. I found them at Radio Shack, though, I know (...) (19 years ago, 27-Dec-05, to lugnet.robotics)
