Ive recently gotten my hands on a Pololu motor controller which I can control
from my Macintosh (see my
tutorial if
youre curious). This has me dreaming of mounting my laptop on a mobile base;
with a web cam, speech synthesis, big graphical display, speech recognition (in
quiet environments), etc., I get a lot of robot goodness very quickly that way.
So now Im wondering whether itd be at all feasible to build the chassis out of
LEGO. The laptop weighs 5 or 6 pounds. I dont need it to move around in a
particularly speedy manner, but faster than a turtle would be nice. I can use
multiple motor controllers to drive more than 2 motors on a side, if that helps.
Does this sound doable, or am I wasting my time? If borderline, do you have any
building tips to make it more likely to work?
Thanks,
Joe

| (...) Well, you can build enormous and very strong structures out of Lego - there are people who've built life-sized dinosaurs and such. With enough Lego and careful construction, I have no doubt you could build something that would carry 50 or 60 (...) (19 years ago, 9-Dec-05, to lugnet.robotics)

| Definitely do-able Joe. I've made several mobile laptop platforms. Here's a crawler that I was planning to use in an bigger project. (URL) plan was to use 4 of them to make a platform like the one that hauls the space shuttle to the launch site. It (...) (19 years ago, 11-Dec-05, to lugnet.robotics)
