Now, the tricky part is how to build a Lego creation so that
different physical sensors (bumpers, touch switches etc) get
mapped to one of these 8 logical sensor values.

Couldn't you do this by simple wire connections?

Let's pretend you had a LOT of the motor/sensor connector wires:

Sensor #1 is connected to input port #1 hit = 1 0 0
Sensor #2 is connected to input port #2 hit = 0 1 0
Sensor #3 is connected to input ports #1, 2 hit = 1 1 0
...
Sensor #7 is connected to input ports #1, 2, 3 hit = 1 1 1

This give you seven sensors (0 0 0 = no hits) with a unique value for
any sensor as long as only ONE sensor is hit at a time.  For example, it
the above if sensors #1 and #2 were hit it would LOOK like sensor #3.
But then I think the various MUX ideas have the same limitation.  You
get around this by placing your sensors such that #3 can never be hit at
the same time as #1 or #2 (for example on the front and back; if you're
moving backwards it HAS to be #3 because it's mounted on the back).

Not the MUX designs I've seen can get you up to 4 sensors PER input
port.  But this design is simpler to implement and code for.  It's a
NEAT idea that has great potential for some applications.

To further the thread on the limitations of having only 3 input sensors: One of the first things that occurred to me was that three inputs gives you 3 bits of input, which means up to 8 sensors. Depending on which sensors trigger, you convert that (...) (25 years ago, 7-Jan-99, to lugnet.robotics)
