Without the 1x4 plates there is too little friction - the
unit was unable to
climb over anything without them!  Plus the 1x4 plates raise
the unit up a
little, make the tracks wider, and gives the base a much
'meaner', more tank
like look.  The biggest draw back to the plates is they pop-off on a
regularly.  I'm thinking about using some
non-permenant/washable adhesive to
keep them on the new version.  I have no idea what to use,
any suggestions?

I haven't tried any adhesives on my tracks yet, but I was thinking of trying
hot-glue if it doesn't melt the LEGO's or some tub caulk.  School glue and/or
wood glue (leaning more towards wood glue) may have enough strength to hold and
it dissolves in water.

If those options would have proved futile, then my last ditch thought was going
to be to sacrifice a few plates and treads ahead of time and permanently affix
them to one another.

Now that I'm thinking about it... another option (as tedious as it may sound)
might be to take some thread (sewing, embroidery, or cross-stitch) and tie the
plates to the tread links.
