Thank you for your response, Jürgen!

Unfortunately I haven't yet been successful in installing
the right kind of driver to use my Logitec Quickcam
Express (little ball, the old type) or my Lego cam under
Red Hat Linux 7.1 (up2date ;) ).  I have tried both the
Quickcam-tt-09-09-2002 and the Quickcam-vc-1.0.5 drivers.

For me the quickcam-tt-2002-09-09 and qce-ga-0.40c drivers
work with the Lego camera and xawtv under Linux 2.4.19.
Without dirty tricks, I just followed the README.

I believe I also have Linux kernel version 2.4.19 (# kernelversion => 2.4),
and I tried to use both xawtv and quickcam-tt's testquickcam app. Both
responded with that they were unable to open 'video0' (or videodev).

P.S.: ask me any questions when necessary for solving this issue.

You should tell us a bit more what you have tried to do
(see http://www.tuxedo.org/~Eesr/faqs/smart-questions.html).

I am trying to move all WebCam server activities to my Linux PC. Which
ideally includes the RCX webcontrol (like WebRCX and WebBrick).

(interesting url! I should read it thouroughly once ;) )

What application did you try to run?

As mentioned above: xawtv 3.76 and testquickcam (qce-ga-0.40c).
At the moment I am experiencing the problem, that xawtv can't locate the
file libXv.so.1, a file that definetely is present in /usr/X11R6/lib.

Do you have the videodev driver?

The videodev driver is the video4linux (v4l) driver, which is present in
recent linux kernel's, right? Then the answer is: Yes I have it...

A lsmod gives me (after insmod-ing the mod_quickcam (quickcam-tt) driver):
Module                  Size  Used by    Not tainted
mod_quickcam           64480   0  (unused)
videodev                5088   0  [mod_quickcam]
ide-cd                 27296   0  (autoclean)
cdrom                  28608   0  (autoclean) [ide-cd]
ad1816                  9632   0  (autoclean)
sound                  59724   0  (autoclean) [ad1816]
soundcore               4388   4  (autoclean) [sound]
autofs                 11396   1  (autoclean)
3c59x                  26152   1  (autoclean)
ipchains               38952   0
usb-uhci               21764   0  (unused)
usbcore                51712   1  [mod_quickcam usb-uhci]
(N.B. this is also the status after plugging in the camera)

Anything interesting in your system log?

The systemlog (/var/log/messages) doesn't mention anything special about
video or usb devices. (By the way: I do not load the QC drivers at startup).

I am rather new to Linux still, but books and the internet help ;)

Thank you in advance!
Remko
