Infra-Red, by it's nature, is line-of-sight (actually, truth be known,
so is radio, but at least radio passes through most objects) which can
be a problem when the vehicle passes behind a chair or some such
thing. It also may have blind spots depending on what kind of vehicle
is constructed - hence the IR receiver is on a tower, but technically,
you could still build up to and over it. The biggest drawback to IR is
that it's arch-enemy - sunshine - the biggest source of IR out there -
is lurking outside every sunny window. This will limit the range from
which the transmitter can be "seen" by the car. This is probably not
too big of  a problem in most rooms, but a large living room or
ballroom (you do have a ballroom at your estate, right?) could pose a
problem. Personally, I'd like a nice, reasonably fast RC car for use
outdoors. In that case, sunlight would really play havoc with an IR
based car.

P.S.: I haven't got either one of these yet, but I would imagine that
the IR version is more efficient (at least in the transmitter) since
the energy is generally directed at the car whereas with radio
controllers, the radio signal is sent out in all direction
simultaneously and hence most of your battery power is wasted.
