Dear Steve,

Any other suggests of what could be causing this?  Any suggestions of
things to check for?

The connection between the battery holder and circuit board of the RCX is
made by two spring clips.  It's possible that one or both of these clips has
gotten a little bent.

It's not that hard to get into the casing and repair them (do it at your own
risk).

Take off the dark-gray battery cover to expose the green battery case.
Carefully unscrew the four screws inside the battery case.

You can now lever the circuit board and battery case off in one unit.  The
circuit board is friction fitted in the yellow plastic casing, held by
spring clips that provide electrical connection from the circuit board to
the motor and sensor ports.  It's a little stiff, but if you get a screw-
driver under the edge and lever gently you can remove it. It will snap back
into place afterwards.

Between the battery case and the circuit board are two long, thin plastic
spacers which will fall out at some point in this process (don't lose them).

You separate the battery case and the circuit board by wiggling them.  You
can now check the spring clips and bend them back down or, optionally,
solder them into place.

Cheers,

JP

Our FIRST LEGO League team has an RCX that frequently loses it's memory and firmware and needs to be reloaded. However I have not yet personally caught it in the act of forgetting. We changed batteries and it still happens. The battery contacts seem (...) (23 years ago, 13-Nov-01, to lugnet.robotics)
