Hi Everyone,

With the ability to create mechanical aasemblies and have them control with the
RCX or Scout programmable brick, has the thought of using the Mindstorms kit as
an engineering prototype tool occur to anyone? I think this kit provides a
great environment for product development because of the mechanical,
electrical/electronics and embedded software cohesion that exists.MLCAD
provides an excellent tool for capturing mechanical assemblies and drives for
robots and provide a 3D view for reviewing designs. I'm currently writing a
book for McGraw-Hill on Mindstorms Interfacing and will explain my philosophy
and process of product design and development using the MLCAD and other EE
tools in discussing this prototype tool for robot construction. I'm currently
documenting a mechanical drive design shown in the Scout Constructopedia for
the "Bug" using MLCAD as well as hardware and software control interfaces.

Don, I have (more or less) completed a 0.000000250 Ton LEGO Injection
Molding Plant.  It consists of a Mold Press, complete with driven screw,
pneumatic ram and barrel heaters, a Mold Assembly complete with manifold
heater, a Pneumatic Compressor with pressure shutoff switch and a Motorized
Valve to control the ram.  The RCX will be a Motor Control Center!  All that
is left is final connection of those pieces, documenting some of the
original work in MLCAD, making a short video and preparing the web pages.  I
will have it up in about 3 weeks.

LEGO is a wonderful prototyping tool.  Although simplistic it gives the
designer an opportunity to create by 'fiddling with the parts'.  Having
spent 40 years in formal mechanical engineering systems I was amazed to
discover that... there are other ways of designing, in this case, 'freehand'.
