(I mention this in the context of Mindstorms, but this info is useful
for many other applications)

If your machine is fairly large (lots of memory, fast cpu) there's a
way I'm almost positive it could be done with *nix, but not for free:
VMWare ( www.vmware.com ).  Version 3 (currently in beta) includes
full support for USB when you layer Win98, Win2000, WinME, or WinXP on
top of *nix (or probably *nix above Win2K/XP).  The idea is it lets
you run two completely different OS's at the same time.  This of course
assumes you upgrade *nix to handle USB.  Since VMWare only provides a
translation layer between the OS's, instead of attempting to completely
recreate Windows like Wine does, it really does work.

There are other products which also let you simultaneously run *nix and
Windoze, but I'm not sure whether they handle USB yet.  It's worth
checking, because they cost less than VMWare, which is bit pricy (but
has more features).  Plex86 does it for free, but I'm almost positive
it doesn't do USB yet.

If anybody manages to get it to work on a *nix machine using any of
these Windows emulation / layering methods, please give us detailed
instructions on how to do it.  ;-).

Re: Instructions for LegOS USB support

Sigh. Doesn't look like there is any chance that this would work for • *nix,
except maybe with severe Wine hackery. Has anyone else (with any of the
other
alternative OSs) tackled the problem of the new towers? I suppose I can • try
plying one of my kernel-hacking co-workers with good beer, but they all
have
about as much time as I do. :/

I found the following web site:

http://www.mi-ra-i.com/JinSato/MindStorms/legOS/usb_ir_with_legOS.html

(which is in Japanese, so use the fish http://world.altavista.com/ to
translate),
which provides updates to the firmdl3.exe and dll.exe.
Now, when I downloaded the two packages I could unpack them until I
found a program to unpack *.lzh files.  There is a program called:

  lha.exe

which I got out of a package lha213.exe, just do a web search on • lha213.exe:

The dll.exe package contained comments in the loader.c file which • discussed
what changes needed to be performed in the files:

  lnp-logical.h
  lnp-logical.c

These comments were also mentioned on the web site, but even using the
Babel Fish web site to translate, it was not clear until I used the • loader.c
file comments to make the changes.

Footnote: When I extracted the files out of the *.lzh files they were • all
uppercase.  I needed to convert them to lowercase to get • them
              to compile on my system.

(...) That's not much of a solution though - even if you are prepared to splurge the $$$ for VMWare, there is also the matter of buying a copy of Windoze (unless you happend to have been unfortunate enough to have already paid the Microsoft Tax). (...) (23 years ago, 10-Sep-01, to lugnet.robotics)
