Don't confuse the hardware version number (RCX 2.0) with the firmware
version number. The 2.0 firmware has been available as part of the "2.0 RIS
Beta SDK" download for quite some time from the Mindstorms web site. The
2.0
firmware can be downloaded into all RCX bricks, no matter if it's a 1.0,
1.5, or 2.0 brick. The 2.0 desktop software works just fine with both the
USB IR tower and the older serial IR tower, and with all RCX brick
versions - as long as you upgrade the firmware to 2.0.
