Is there any functional difference when you put 2.0 firmware into a 1.0 or
1.5 RCX rather than a 2.0?

| Don't confuse the hardware version number (RCX 2.0) with the firmware version number. The 2.0 firmware has been available as part of the "2.0 RIS Beta SDK" download for quite some time from the Mindstorms web site. The 2.0 firmware can be downloaded (...) (23 years ago, 24-Aug-01, to lugnet.robotics)
