I have noted quite a few posts about use of electromagnets
with the RCX.
I have a question - what do you want to use one for?
Electromagnets are about as inefficient as helicopters. They
both burn energy just standing still !!
If you look at the typical electromagnet specs, you'll see they
will consume perhaps 1/2 amp @ 9v. Your RCX batteries and the
motor driver chips will supply that for a while - but not long.
Meanwhile, the electromagnet may have moved an iron pole
piece perhaps 1/4 inch if you're lucky.
Technic motors are VERY efficient. You can make linear motion
from their rotating outputs VERY easily.
You can make grippers easily too, just in case you thought an
electromagnet was a simple way to pick things up.
So, to return to my original question - what do you want to use
electromagnets for?
