Hi, fellow pneumatics fans

Ever since the RCX Controlled Air Compressor Tester was posted, there
have been many suggestions for it's improvement, in particular to
linearize the tracing. More importantly, several people have commented
that it was, um, rather low in technology.

I'm pleased to say that pneumatic pump testing has now gone high tech
with the provision of a pressure sensor lovingly handcrafted by John
Barnes. Yes, the gadgets that John builds have travelled widely round
the world.

After getting over the initial calibration problem (pressure is measured
in % light values), I lost no time in taking pressure readings of any
thing with a nozzle that will fit the Lego pneumatic tubing. I even
wanted to try the aquarium pump in the fish tank - but the fishes would
not have it. They would have suffered from extreme oxygen deprivation
while their pump was taken away for testing...

Well, I finally got down to do some serious pump testing using the new
pressure sensor and you can see the results  at

This round of testing has produced a new winner. I'm sure Ralph Hempel
would be doubly pleased.

I suppose I'll soon have to send the previous mechanical air compressor
tester to lugnet.museum ;-)

(...) Nice work as ever! One type of pump I've not seen you test yet is a varation of Michael Powell's using an 8 tooth gear onto 40 tooth gear reduction rather than the belt drive, as this seems to improve performance significantly. How about a (...) (24 years ago, 10-Apr-01, to lugnet.robotics, lugnet.technic, lugnet.build, lugnet.dacta)

With all this talk of pneumatics going on, I feel I must inform you that all my current and pending creations hardly use pneumatics at all, I've binned them in favour of something more suited to my needs. I'd love to tell you but you'll have to wait (...) (24 years ago, 10-Apr-01, to lugnet.robotics, lugnet.technic, lugnet.build, lugnet.dacta)
