One curious item is that on a picture that I believe was for RIS 2.0, I saw
an RCX brick stamped 1.0.  Is that possible?  Are RIS 2.0 kits in Japan
selling with RCX 1.0 bricks?  I guess there really is no difference in the
RCX for RIS 2.0.

Actually, I wouldn't read too much into that. I just received my RIS
1.5 on Friday and it contained and RCX 2.0, but the photos in the
manuals and on the box show at least 15 different RCX 1.0's (including
3 with 5 digit serial numbers). I suspect all you can read into this
is that Lego is recycling photographs.

P.S.: Curiously, the RCX 1.0's with the 5 digit serial numbers that
are pictured, do *not* have the external power jack. I have to assume
that the external power jack was a short-lived experiment in the
series. The highest serial number I can see in the manual in something
in the 10xxxx range, but my RCX 1.0 #131410 does have the external
jack. The other possiblity is that there are different RCX's for
different markets. The units without the external jack have two studs
above where the jack would have been. Now I have to wonder: if the
#13xxxx's have external jacks and the #10xxxx don't, do the earlier
units have the same PCB? If so then it might be possible to add the
jack to them. The RCX 2.0 PCB is different and the places where the
additional parts would have been to support the jack don't exists.

Thanks to everyone who responded, both by posting and email. I had a great time looking at Jin Sato's site as well as other Japanese Mindstorms sites, thanks Juergen. Isn't it odd that the Japanese version of RIS 2.0 shipped back in November but (...) (24 years ago, 10-Mar-01, to lugnet.robotics)
