In a pinch - and if you don't mind spending some extra money - you can always by a train set like 4561 "Railway Express" for $129.99 or 4548 "Speed Regulator" for $41.99. (...) Pitsco Dacta had the panels alone in the 2000 catalog (#D979912) for $35. I don't have the 2001 catalog in front of me but I recall that they added a few connector wires and upped the price to $49. You might try using the old part number and (...) There's usually somebody selling the original Lego adapters on eBay for about $18. I suppose that's highish compared to a Radio Shack 9v unit.
