You can get 1.0 and 1.5 systems on ebay, but there is some risk and the
prices are amazingly high (80-95% of retail). There is not that much
difference between the 1.0 and 1.5 kits, and I recommend the latest release,
because half of it is a software thing, and you know how that goes. If you
have any other technics sets, the difference in parts is minor, and 1.0 plus
the 1.5 upgrade kit (about $25?) gives you more than either kit alone.
The real hardware difference between the RCX's is the 1.0 had a plug for
wall-wart power, which means you can run without batteries. 1.5 RCX's
(which still say 1.0, annoyingly) don't have this socket. Most people here
think that is a bad thing. There is no memory difference or faster CPU or
anything.
Don't agonize over this decision. Get one (or two)!
