I am currently in the last stages of reorganizing my (primarily) Technic
collection. For the specialized Technic elements I am now using Zag
Professional Organizers. These are cool in that they do not rely on dividers
but instead have small bins that fit in the organizer. see;

The only problem is that they are rather shallow and a few things have to be
stored separately. Oh, and they are really, really expensive!
For beams, plates, I sort by color in 12qt Rubbermaid containers (1 for beams,
bricks, etc, 1 for plates).
Otherwise I store sets, especially larger ones, in the original Lego boxes.
This all fits into 1 floor to ceiling closet.
