I'm amazed at how many brick types there actually are - clearly many of
them are unnecessary...some of the bricks seem to have 'evolved' from
earlier Lego designs - which makes sense - but others are *highly* model-specific
but could easily be replaced with just two or three 'standard' bricks. I
wonder why Lego did that.

I 'came back' to Lego just recently after a 15 year absence (the return largely
triggered by MindStorms) - and the one thing that struck me was how specialised Lego
has now become.

I know that when I was 'playing' (the only verb that I ever used) with it as a kid, I
used to just wish for one piece that combined a hinge with a wheel and had a
television screen on it (or something similar) but now I think that Lego is actually
better as fundamental blocks with little specialisation that can be combined and
recombined into almost anything.

Have I become a Lego purist?

Has anyone else lamented the increasing number of model-specific pieces?

This probably ought to be in the FAQ - and you've probably had this question 1e6 times before....How do people with *VAST* Lego collections store them? I've just spent about four evenings collecting every Lego brick in the house and sorting them (...) (24 years ago, 18-Aug-00, to lugnet.robotics)
