How about more of a cable car mechanism? It would take a lot less infrastructure.
By suspending your robot from the ends of three cables which are anchored in
different corners of the room, you could reach more areas of the room.

sounds similar to yours. THe basic idea is a dynamic web-presence for the
exhibition going on below the robot.

Unfortunately, the blimp never left the ground. We found that we would
need a baloon about the size of a VW beetle to get our equipment in the
air. We are currently working on a project involving suspended tracks...

I did some work on that. It was for a webcam that could move around and lower
a part of it with the camera and could spin around... It was going fine until
I realized I had to support the track every few inches. WAY to many holes in
the ceiling for a rental. Sigh. So I switched to a track on the ground.

Not a bad idea, at one point we were thinking about an X configuration so that the robot would be able to cover more space. (...) (24 years ago, 3-May-00, to lugnet.robotics)
