Right, but all of those aren't standard computer IR -- they're functioning
like learning remotes.

I think it is all pretty generic stuff, so if a remote could learn it, a
computer could generate it dynamically. Anyway I've found the reference,
funnily enough its on the Lego Mindstorms Internals page carried by this
very list server - http://www.crynwr.com/lego-robotics/ - look for the
Communications section.

Quotes of actual success, rather than speculation, are:

"Thomas Dow is using his HP-100LX to generate RCX IR codes."

"Peter Middlestorb reports that a learning remote does indeed work. He used
a Casio Model 1174 CMD-40 watch."

"Vadim Strizhevsky and Owen Stenseth have a program which lets you send and
