I agree, standardized tests are a poor indicator of actual "brainpower"
at best.
However, the system as it exists is based on them. It's kinda a
compromise, but
you have to perform well on them to be passed on. If you believe any of
the
education studies out there, these standardized tests are better
predictors of
first year performance in a higher education setting than stuff like
GPA's due to
the great variance in the way high schools grade their students.
Certainly the
MCAT's (as terrible a set of tests as they are) are considered the best
predictor
of how a particular student will do in the first 1-2 years of Med
School.
