Re: Why Java for Robots (was NXT and bluetooth enabled phones)

(...) What do you consider "ludicrously huge"? Java for robots in fact does not require a virtual machine at all, it can run on a Java implementation in silicon. We've been using this for about 4 years, and so have classes at the Univ of Utah and (...) (20 years ago, 18-Jan-06, to lugnet.robotics)

  Re: Why Java for Robots

(...) Perhaps the best answer is to have the sensor tell you itself. You do this with "tagging memory" associated with each sensor and actuator. This is similar to IEEE1451, the smart sensor spec. We have developed and are using such a scheme on (...) (20 years ago, 18-Jan-06, to lugnet.robotics)

Re: How many people signed up for the NXT Developer's Program?

(...) I would work with Brian Bagnall and Jeurgen Stuber on the port of Lejos to NXT, doing beta testing and documentation. Personal reason : I'll teach an introductory course in robotics with Java at Berkeley in the fall. My dream is to use NXT (...) (20 years ago, 18-Jan-06, to lugnet.robotics)

(...) John, Seeing that GPS accuracy is on the order of several yards (optimistically speaking) what LEGO robot wouuld you build that could make good use of GPS, and how would it use GPS? Cheers S (20 years ago, 18-Jan-06, to lugnet.robotics)

Re: Pneumatic Control in 8868 Alternate Model

(...) You could try (URL) but the site seems buggy right now- I get intermittent errors when looking at different pages, including search and 'add to cart'. Also, based on your email address, it looks like you're not in the US, to find a dealer in (...) (20 years ago, 18-Jan-06, to lugnet.robotics)

Pneumatic Control in 8868 Alternate Model

Hello, I was interested in purchasing the Lego Dacta Sets 9617 and especially 9633 in pneumatics..... any clues as to how I can get them ? Best regards, Alejandro (20 years ago, 18-Jan-06, to lugnet.robotics)

Re: Why java (or other langs) for Robots

Dan (...) structures (...) youngsters for (...) You almost had me convinced there for a moment. 4GLs are wonderful for quick "I wonder if this will work" programs. And that's exactly what most of the robot we build are. But such languages require a (...) (20 years ago, 18-Jan-06, to lugnet.robotics)

Re: How many people signed up for the NXT Developer's Program?

(...) I'm wondering what it means to be "something like LabView". Robolab is something like LabView, but it isn't LabView. It is a GUI application written in G running in the LabView runtime engine. LabView itself (i.e., the editor and the (...) (20 years ago, 18-Jan-06, to lugnet.robotics)

  Why Java for Robots

(...) Did you have array bound checking turned on? Do you know how many you've had? (...) That's an argument that all C programmers repeat ad nauseam. And the one about "pointer arithmetic is faster". I used to repeat them too when I was a C (...) (20 years ago, 18-Jan-06, to lugnet.robotics)

  Why Java for Robots

(...) I wouldn't use C. I'd use a language that has sub-range types and I'd _tell_ the compiler the range of the color sensor. Peter (20 years ago, 18-Jan-06, to lugnet.robotics)
