My birthday is coming soon, and so I’ve asked for money. I’m saving up for a new camera, and currently my eye is on the

Fuji s602. It has a 6x zoom, extremely fast shutter response and burst rates, a good macro- 1 cm focus (although this has some barrel distortion, I’m planning on eventually buying some close-up filters so I can do macro with no distortion and at full zoom) and a hotshoe.

I’ve been really impressed by some of the pictures here, and I’m wondering what cameras you guys use. I know that Bram uses a Nikon coolpix 990 (I think) and that the coolpix line is great for macrophotography, but I wanted something a bit larger with more versitlity. I currently use a Sony P-71, but it simply doesn’t focus close enough and doesn’t have any manual features, such as aperature control, shutter speed, flash sync, etc.

So, what do you guys use? Any recomendations?

I don’t know how hard it is to find these features, but it’s nice to have:
  • A power-in socket to take advantage of your camera not going about, so you don’t have to use batteries.
  • A jack for an external flash, which allows you to flash the subject further to the side, which lights it better instead of washing it out. This one might be difficult to find, though.
Regarding the S602, I like the sound of faster shutter times, that means you don’t have to worry so much about using a tripod to avoid hand-jitter. The high-ISO claim also sounds good, it means you could conceivably avoid using flash entirely and just use a well-lit room, although they’re only available if you’re using 1 megapixel, in which case it might come out blurry like my Kodak DC215... :-(

Nice camera.

Cheers,

(...) Well, this has an AC input jack and a hotshoe, if that's what you mean... (...) The high ISO was very interesting, and I can't wait until I get the camera. (In one or two months, hopefully!) I'm going to try using a few cheap slave flashes (...) (21 years ago, 8-Jul-03, to lugnet.publish.photography, FTX)
