My birthday is coming soon, and so Ive asked for money. Im saving up for a
new camera, and currently my eye is on the
Fuji s602. It has a 6x zoom, extremely fast shutter response and burst
rates, a good macro- 1 cm focus (although this has some barrel distortion,
Im planning on eventually buying some close-up filters so I can do macro
with no distortion and at full zoom) and a hotshoe.
Ive been really impressed by some of the pictures here, and Im wondering
what cameras you guys use. I know that Bram uses a Nikon coolpix 990 (I
think) and that the coolpix line is great for macrophotography, but I wanted
something a bit larger with more versitlity. I currently use a Sony P-71,
but it simply doesnt focus close enough and doesnt have any manual
features, such as aperature control, shutter speed, flash sync, etc.
So, what do you guys use? Any recomendations?

Ive been using the Coolpix 5000 for a little over a year now and am happy. The
Fuji looks like a good choice but one thing Ive learned w/ todays digital
cameras is that they eat up batteries! I strongly suggest you look at power
requirements and options the manufacturer can provide.
Example- I used to own the Coolpix 880 and it uses those overpriced and
sometimes hard to find 2CR5 lithium batteries. Fortunately, Nikon got smart
when it came out w/ the 5000 by providing the rechagable Li-ion 2CR5 battery and
charger w/ the camera (you had to buy separately w/ the 880). One accessory
bought separately and love is the AA battery pack that attaches beneath the
camera that also forms a good grip for shooting vertical and provides vertical
release too. AA cost much less than 2CR5s and best of all can be bought just
about anywhere.

| (...) The Fuji uses 4 AA batteries, so I plan to get (or use my current) rechargable NIMH batteries. It did pretty good on pattery life, too. I believe it lasted over 3 hours, which is very good. (...) Yeah, I usually prefer AA to fancy propiertary (...) (21 years ago, 8-Jul-03, to lugnet.publish.photography, FTX)
