The area of trademark law is a bit fluffy (short on hard and fast rules). For an
interesting trademark law case that discusses the law of trademarks as it relates
to internet domain names, check out the decision in Hasbro, Inc. v. Clue
Computing at:

http://www.clue.com/legal/hasbro/d2.html

Hasbro, the manufacturer of the board and computer games "Clue" filed suit
against the holder of the domain name clue.com alleging trademark infringement
and dilution. The case is fairly readable for non lawyers and my quick review of
the order leaves me in total agreement with the result (I am a licensed attorney
and patent attorney and have a masters degree in intellectual property law,
although I practice in the area of consumer law).

Take a look at the web page.

Regards,

Mark Cornell

Can they really enforce this? I mean, I have built a (virtual) boat model
right out of the LEGO idea book, and then made a rendering of it, sinking. So
what's more natural than calling it 'The Sinking of Regina Maersk'?

Do they have a trade-mark on the boat name? (I checked, there exists a ship
today called R.M., it's the worlds largest supertanker - they say)

Ideas anyone?

Wow! Thanks for that pointer. That was interesting indeed. So in your considered opinion, when Lego requests that Lego not appear in domain names of fannish sites, are they harboring a valid concern? Similarity is higher than in the Hasbro case, but (...) (24 years ago, 28-Jan-00, to lugnet.publish, lugnet.general)
