(...) Well, no. Dismasting a ship was probably the easiest way - the opposing ship couldn't manuever to make an effective broadside while you can. You don't do that with grapeshot. For most countries' fleets/ships/captains the whole point of shooting at an opposing ship was to disable it, board it and force the crew (or what was left of them) to surrender.
