Ahoy,

Following my Spanish, Austrian and Brunswicker infantry (green, dark grey
and black respectively), I'm wondering what other colours could be used for
vaguely accurate 18th-19th century soldiers.

I think that light grey (Belgian IIRC) and white (French, when they couldn't
source blue dye) are definite starters. (All those light grey HP torsos are
going to waste at the moment!).

What other colours - Yellow (Royalist French?), Orange (Dutch?), Tan, Brown
- would be candidates?

#1 - Portuguese "Caçadores" (Chasseurs) in the napoleonic wars, brown
uniform (lots of possible colour variations for trousers). The Contemporary
Portuguese army featured such a vast number of colour combinations that
you're likely to find some that can fit in. The Dragoons had a white torso
and red trousers, for instance, like modern Brazilian cerimonial guard.

#2 - Spanish "Guarda Mora" (Moor guards), a cavalry regiment from former
Spanish Morroco (used as late as the Spanish Civil war!). They are dressed
in white IIRC with LONG white capes - dunno the timing for its formation,
though :-(

Thanks for those. It looks like I'll have to find some more horses and
saddles, as all the unusual uniforms seem to worn by cavalry units.

And another one, to which I have no answer: how were the uniforms of the
Papal States (not the same as the Vatican) in the 19th century? Any chance
they were yellow?

Good suggestion! I've subsequently found a pic of yellow coated Spanish
cavalry as well.

Cheers

Richie
