Me too.  It might be that the best way to see this happen is to build and
publish a bunch of great MOCs from current (or currentish) parts and engineer
(or hope) to get them released in the MOC line from LD.

Sure, it's cheaper to re-release, but Lego
creates dozens of new sets every year, and from what we've seen in recent
times they could do a lot worse than a revamp of (what seems) a popular theme.

IIRC, _The Ultimate LEGO Book_ mentions that Pirates is (or was) the most
popular theme.  (Or am I just nuts?  I'll have to look it up when I get home
tonight.)

Why only big sets?  Well, there are several reasons.

Big sets ROCK!!!  I have a dream of giant ships all over my living room with a
great big island fortress completely blocking my TV.  Big sets provide us with
16-wide hulls and island baseplates!  And the flagship isn't big.

For someone who doesn't own any pirates already, getting a small
set wouldn't be very interesting as they wouldn't have
many pirate pieces/minifigs.

I dunno.  I actually think that medium sized sets are better for that.
Actually half-priced clearance Pirates at TRU (coupled with finding RTL)
brought me out of my 20 year dark age.  Pirates Perilous Pitfall was the first
set I bought as an adult (I think I bought a Pirates Ambush that same day).
Does 392 pieces count as a big set?  I guess it was kind of big for the Pirates
line -- there were only eight sets with more parts -- but I still think of it
as a medium sized set.  (Man how I wish I'd taken more advantage of those half
price pirates...I should have maxed out by credit cards :-)

I always thought the purpose of the small sets is that you buy trolley-loads
of 'em, and have hordes of pirate mateys and/or Imperials :)

Yup.  And I buy/bought 6259/6265/6266 for specialized walls with printing too.
