This should have been in .pirates: What are some ideas for oars? Oarlocks particuiarly? Surely few get to the Isle without some rowing. A practical ship's oar goes to 10 or 12 long. Magnus, You might want to contact the United States Coast Guard. They have an archive of historical data dealing with piracy in U.S. coastal waters from their inception in the late 1700's.
