*Ahem*

Spice Girls?

*Ahem*

I'm afraid my waterline design precluded interiors for the crew belowdecks,
only the officers' cabins, mess, and the small arms cash. Aside from taking
down all the actually rigging (shudder... the stays etc) I can open her up
fairly easily -- a skill aquired building starfighter carriers.

The deckspace was another goal -- my past ships (built with the stock hulls)
had been cramped, and I'd always wanted to correct that. Makes so much more
room for boarders... Masts 2x2x11? Oh my! I must say (unfortunately) that I
had no clue such things existed (the trials and tribulations of youth, I
suppose...)

The 6-pounders were actually desperate last-minute affairs, after I realized
the local stores no longer had sets with cannons... Wild West sets were on
clearance a while back... more than a while, I think... :) Feel free to
borrow the design -- I'm quite happy with it, even the Army models!

As to the fireships, based on the reading I've done (mildly... alright,
ridiculously excessive... another vice, I suppose) the Admiralty had a
fireship spat early in the 1800s. They ordered sloops and brigs to be built
with burning them in mind, but sent them cruising with small gun armaments
in the mean time. When the Dutch, French, and Americans started to take
chunks out of trade they chose to rein in and just build regular cruisers.
Fireships hadn't been all that successful anyway.

I'll see what I can do about better pictures!

G'day, all.

  Welcome!

My name is Kenneth Tam, and this is my first post to pirates (second post to
Lugnet -- sorry, my first duty is to space... *sigh*).

That's OK.  We all have our guilty pleasures.  Mine is listening
to the Spice Girls!  (Well, only rarely.  Very rarely.  Um, would
you believe I just like looking at a few of them?)

Anyhow, as I mentioned above my main loyalty falls into the space realm, but
of late I've been aching to build an actual *ship*... so I did.

I'd like to present to you all the 20-Gun Sloop-of-war, HMS Flame, circa
1803, built as best to scale as possible with what pieces aren't in the
space craft.

Let me know what you think (sorry the pictures aren't better)!

I can actually get to the pics, so I can see the ship in all
its glory.  The only pic I really wish were better is the
overview picture--the one that lets us see it all in one frame.

I really, really, really like the details on this ship.  Those
six-pounders are especially cool--very nicely done.  The sense
of scale is also extremely strong (it's what you were going for,
after all)--but it really does show up in the photos.  The bustle
on deck no doubt helps--but the marines, crew, etc. all have room
to *move* which is a persistent problem on most .pirates
creations.  I'm also curious as to the ship's construction--does
it come apart easily, or must you disassemble to get at the
interior?  Some "exploded view" shots would be really neat.

I really do like those six-pounders.  May I borrow the design?

My only suggestion, if it's possible, would be to replace the
2x2-brick masts with masts of 2x2x11 columns topped with three-
piece Pirate masts (or some other round theme).  I fully
understand, though, if the bricks are an expedient.  It's not
like loads of pillars and masts are easy to get anymore!

Overall, the ship looks wonderful.  I'm looking forward to seeing
more pictures (I hope?)--I like the index you've set up as well.
Does your reading indicate that ships were commonly converted
from fireships to men-of-war?  I hadn't even realized that
fireships were purpose-constructed in any but the tiniest
numbers, given their rather special purpose!

  all best
