Per my previous post for brainstorms, here's an example of some ideas to attract
new members. Notice that the list is pretty diverse and to some it may be
radical. Feel free to read, but try to bridle your feedback for now!
Attracting Sleepers and new members?
1. Clubs and orgs. could diversify the locations in which they do shows and
events. This broader cast net might capture persons who would otherwise not
notice a local LEGO club.
2 We could create a video (a DVD to be shown live or online FLASH) to welcome
new members.
3. Each club should assign and perhaps train newcomer ambassadors.
4. Each club should host a newcomer area on their website.
5. Introduce/lobby for a merit badge to the cub scouts or girl scouts for
"construction design?"
6. Clubs and events could build items based on real-time pop-culture or current
events to attract the local press or other media.
7. Organizations could establish a common, public meeting location for all club
meetings.
8. Each club or org. could spin off a "junior" program (for younger persons).
9. Survey new comers to determine how they found out about us.
10. Run low cost ads in the newspaper annoucing our club.
11. Clubs could do car-wash like fundraisers and both raise money and attract
potential new members.
12. Brickshelf could require real names for photo-posts...this way the "hidden"
posters could receive praise for their creations. There appears to be many
lurkers on Brickshelf that don't post on LUGNET. I don't know if this is true
or not because of the cryptic names.
13. LUGNET members could offer to seed clubs in cities that don't otherwise
have a LUG.
14. Clubs could actively seek out passive display space at malls, libraries or
other vacant space to promote their clubs.
15. Every club and/or LUGNET member could carry a few bulk-produced business
cards that contains the vital web address info. to point new fans in the right
direction.
16. Each public facing event should include at least one,"Getting Started in
the LEGO hobby" or "LEGO Fan 101" presentation.
17. Each LUG could create a newbie brochure/FAQ for all events.
18. Clubs could capture e-mail addresses at public events and follow-up
afterwards.
Your list should be next. : )
