I've been wondering if some estudious person with a milling machine could make some train wheels in the style of the BBB wheels from metal. That way we might could pick up power from the Lego track and apply power to a technic motor. Discuss! Rob H (20 years ago, 30-Jul-04, to lugnet.parts.custom)

(...) Do we need the whole wheel to be metal? Or would snap on tyres be sufficient? What if you made metal flanged (and blind) tyres that snapped onto the current BBB blind wheel? It would increase the size a bit, no doubt but might avoid the (...) (20 years ago, 30-Jul-04, to lugnet.parts.custom)

My thinking was to use a technic beam as the support structure and have a small ball bearing (bee bee?) and spring in one of the technic holes behing the wheel. That way, (...) Sorry for replying to my own post but I just thought of something that some of these wheels may need to incorporate. I bet there needs to be some sort of rubber traction "tire" on non-conducting wheels. I would hate to see all this get mocked up and (...) (20 years ago, 30-Jul-04, to lugnet.parts.custom)

(...) In HO the presence/absence of tyres is sometimes considered a sign of low/hi quality. High quality models don't have them because they don't need them, they free roll enough that adhesion due to weight is sufficient. IIRC slippage is more (...) (...) Using a BBB wheel would be the best starting point. I know that many of the train builders in Europe use the old spoked wheel, with a custom metal flanged tire added. I'd recomend turning a standard BBB to remove the flang and a git of the (...) (20 years ago, 30-Jul-04, to lugnet.parts.custom, lugnet.trains)

(...) Agree with the high quality = no need for traction tires, but there is more to it than just weight. A high quality model has less need for traction tires beceause it designed to keep its wheels on the railhead better, either by springing or (...) (20 years ago, 30-Jul-04, to lugnet.parts.custom)
