Hi Steve,
I think you are assuming this is my 'bot. This was just something I found on
YouTube. I have a Micromouse robot in the works so I will attempt to answer
your questions based on my experience.
I believe it is flashing the LEDs in an attempt to cancel the ambient light.
Not sure how sophisticated it is in its cancel ambient calculation but even
something primitive can help the robot deal with varying lighting conditions as
it covers the maze. Based on my testing, I don't think the light sensors are
capable of seeing more then 2 or 3 inches reliably, so only the close wall.
I put up a BrickFest2007 crate contraption video on YouTube yesterday. It is
basically a compilation of the video clips from David that I put together in an
order that roughly fallows the flow of balls in the contraption.
