If it is anything like the one I am used to, there will not be much room • at all
inside it.  You would get 2-3 PNLTC modues in in total in the one I am • thinking
of (a PGE caboose), at least, if the seats were not in the way, along with • the
wood box...

You may be right.  The NHVRR runs their train four or five times each spring
and fall.  The last time I was out there was in November so I am going
completely by memory.  In the area of the caboose where they have previously
had layouts, there are no seats, no furniture, etc.  It is completely empty.
As I recall, the last layout I saw was about the size of a 4'x8' sheet of
plywood and there was plenty of room to make it at least 1.5x if not 2x
bigger (certainly in lenght if not in width).

More details on NHVRR are available at:  http://www.mindspring.com/~nhvry

Poking through their site a bit, I think the actual car is a "#188, Railway
Post Office, ex-Southern Rwy" which, not being real knowledgeable about
trains, doesn't mean much to me.

I may try and get down there in the next week or two.  I have no idea if
anyone will be around but it isn't real far from my house.  If you are
familiar with the Research Triangle area, Bonsal, where NHVR operates out
of, is near the Sharon Harris nuclear power plant.  Head south on US 1
towards Sanford and take the exit after Hwy. 55 and follow the signs.

(...) A Railway Post Office car (RPO) is basically a mobile Post Office sorting station. They are usually the size of a passenger car, but there is very little furniture inside. There will probably be a small office area for the Postmaster, and then (...) (25 years ago, 29-Feb-00, to lugnet.org.us.nclug)
