Hi all,

I would like to pass on some ideas that I had for the Zoo in the upcoming GATS layout. So far Leah and Brian Alano have said that they’d help with the zoo, but anyone is welcome to make stuff for it.

The zoo is right next to the Theme Park, and there’s going to be a dividing wall between the 2 areas that is based on the Classic Castle City wall standard as stated in Brian’s post on Yahoo. Of course, this wall will be quasi-modern looking as opposed to a crennelated medieval wall. We will need 2 train-size gateways--1 at each side.

The first thing I’d like to make clear about building something for the zoo is that you do not need to have animals in order to build something. There are several non-animal structures that you can make, such as:

• Consession stand
• Ticket booth
• Sign
• Animal food storage building

Of course, I’d like most of the space in the zoo to contain animal pens of some sort. I would like to have a gray baseplate foundation for at least half of the zoo. (I can provide the gray baseplates.) Then I would like the cage style pens to be made on either 16X16, 16X32 or 32X32 green baseplates. I think that building the cages on smaller baseplates will let us move around and rearrange the zoo quite easily. If you want to build a cage on regular plates or bricks, that’s cool too. A couple of caged animal ideas I thought of were:

• Bird aviary
• Monkey house

There are several types of animals that go better in an open area with a fence around it than in a cage. These types of pens would take up more space that a cage, but they might be just as easy to build since they don’t need a roof. Animals that would go in a fenced-in area would include:

• Elephants
• Horses
• Alligators
• Polar bears

There are also LEGO animals that would go well in one of those aqua-arena things. This would be a good opportunity for someone with DUPLO animals. We could make a pool with bleachers in front of it. This could be used for LEGO size sharks and dolphins &/or DUPLO size killer whales and seals.

Last but not least, there are those tiny little critters that go in glass aquariums. We could use clear panel pieces to make large (for minifigs) aquariums for creepy crawlies like:

• Snakes
• Frogs
• Scorpions
• Spiders

I know that there are several Duplo animals that aren’t made in LEGO scale (giraffes, lions, tigers to name a few). Please feel free to use these too, if you have any. I think they’d add a great variety to the zoo.

If you want to build an animal out of pieces instead of using a pre-existing LEGO animal, please do. There’s a great list of nonstandard animals at Classiccastle.com. It shows examples of everything from barnyard beasts to Safari fauna.

Overall I’d like the zoo to have 2 basic halves. One half would have smaller items that sit on the gray baseplates (which can serve as walkways). The other half would be the larger fenced in pens on the green baseplates. In the green area we could use gray plates for sidewalks, like Brian A. suggested with the theme park.

Please don’t limit your building to the ideas I listed here. Anything goes...besides dinosaurs. Also if anyone has any ideas on how we could make the zoo better or something cool to add to it, please let us know.

(...) I was also thinking about putting a pedestrian gate near the middle of the wall. The nice thing about using the castle wall standard is that anyone can contribute a single baseplate-length of wall. I propose using primary and secondary colors (...)
