Did a Home Depot run today, and checked prices, availability, etc.  I
also picked up all the stuff to make the sign post, etc.  I came home,
prepared it, and put it together.  It looks great!  I'll bring it to
the interim meeting (next friday or so, as yet not confirmed).  We'll
definitely need a very sturdy base piece and the bracing bracket on
the side of the table.  It's very light, but everything gets a lot
heavier at the end of an 8 foot pole!  Other than that one long pole,
everything else collapses for easy transport.

I'm just going to list some prices that I found, that should give us
some idea of all our options.  I've included some prices (ie. new
doors) basically for reference only.  More discussion follows in the
list.  Please read it carefully, as there are some items that you guys
could help with:

Glass Shielding:
~~~~~~~~~~
Lucite TUF (best quality)
4' x 8' x 3/32" thick sheet                 $ 109
Lucite ES (prob. good enough)
4' x 8' x 5/64" thick sheet                  $ 54
* Home Depot will NOT cut them for us, but it could be done ourselves
with a sturdy X-acto and some time.  A plastics shop would save some
time, and still be a possible source of "scrap" pieces that would suit
us just fine..
Doors:
~~~~
New very basic (primed) doors:
30" x 80" or 32" x 80"                        $ 35

Cheap, mangled, busted, or clearance     ??
doors (Home Depot had none suitable)
My guess on the price would be $10 - $15

* I do have one 28" x 80" door that I got for nothing.  It should
still work for us.  I'm still on the lookout for more doors.  I think
all of you should stop into at least 2 building supply stores near
you, and check out the clearance section.  All these stores have them,
but they don't always have basic doors in there.  It's just a matter
of checking a whole bunch of them.  Ideally, we want 30" x 80"

Sawhorse (OK Kevin, "Trestle" ...) supports:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Good ones (beefy!)                             $ 9 / pair
Cheap ones (good enough for us)      $ 4 / pair
2 x 4 lumber:
~~~~~~~~
Cheap spruce 10' length                    $ 3.90 / board
REALLY cheap 92" length                 $ 2.85 / board

* Doing some quick math, I figure each sawhorse will cost us about $9
or so, or $18 per table.

Plywood (instead of using doors):
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Standard Spruce 4' x 8' x 5/8" sheet   $ 21.50
(very little flex, just OK for us)
Fibreboard - medium density 3/4"        $ 25.50
(even less flex, would work fine)
Fibreboard - med. density 5/8"             $ 23.00
(slightly more flex, still great)
* Using these sheets would require a little redesign of table layout.
Kevin, can you have a go at seeing if this is even feasible?  Remember
that we can cut up the plywood anyway we'd like, and the sawhorses
don't have to be connected directly to the plywood (ie. one sawhorse
could be supporting more than one piece of plywood in spots).
Banquet Table Legs:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Pair of legs                                            $ 18
(These are the flimsier kind, but would
work fine for us).

* These are an option, and at first glance, look to be about the same
price as a pair of sawhorses.  However, they don't come with hardware
(you need about a dozen wood screws per leg), and ideally, they
require an extra piece of wood to be attached to the bottom of the
table for added strength.  The other downsides are that they are
obviously permanent, bolted onto the table, and the length cannot be
customized, unlike the sawhorses which can be cut to whatever length
we like.

Opinions, please!  What do you think we should do?

Robin
