Just as LEGO was instrumental for us in the development of the new Ventax
Viper AS 212, LEGO aparently was used in the development of the harmonic
drivetrain of the Falkirk Wheel in Scotland!

http://www.falkirkwheel.info/

From said page:

"The concept for the gearing mechanism came out of the wheel form where the
circular caissons are enveloped by the hooked arms at each end which revolve
around a central hub. With the help of a simple "lego" model it soon became
clear that the gears provided the simple solution to maintaining the
stability of the caissons."

A show on Discovery 2 nights ago featured the wheel. What a gorgeous
structure! On the show they talked with the design firm and said they wanted
to incorporate design elements from Celtic knots, the bone structure of
fish, and medieval torture devices. I think they've brilliantly succeded!

Hint with the webpage: The grey words on the right, under the image, are
links as well. I.e. - under TECH, you see Diagram, Plan, and Elevation.
Under overview, you can press Location, Site, CAD Rendering, and Animation
(which I strongly recomend viewing!).

Wouldn't this be an amazing project to try for a train show? It's
unfortunate it's probably impossible due to no large inner-diameter ring
gears. :( Maybe there is a way to get around this!
