Hey Calum,

2002 and we've cut our expectations back to basic tubs.  Hmm, not much of a
stretch from here to the belching smokestacks and mega-urban wasteland of
Bladerunner. :P

I know what you mean about the sets, but I'm finding that I'm getting much more
picky about what I buy, as well.  Consequently, I've got a pretty long to-buy
list, and I guess I'm waiting for the Zellers clearance sales to determine what
I'm actually going to buy.  I think I need more time actually driving the brick
to make use of the pieces I've already got.

On another note, does anyone know of any Europe-only sets (train sets?) that I
should be looking for here in Vienna?  I was so impressed that the airport had
a little Lego-only store... that sold track sets, including crossovers and
points.  People who understand the need for more than straight and curved
rails, yay!

Oh - the subway here is great.  The little electronic signs in the stations do
more than advertise the concept of advertising on them - they tell you how many
minutes to the next train.  Incidentally, this is easy, because the number is
almost always 1.  Great system.  The over-track advertising in the major
stations is a large video screen, and some of the cars have smaller versions.
Won't be long til that hits TO.

The UN complex here looks like a Quake level.  I'm not making this up - the guy
I'm here with arrived at this conclusion simultaneously and independently.  We
spend breaks arguing where the power-ups ought to be.

Well,

I went to go over and check out some of those New York Toy Fair 2002
previews, and you know, the new sets they showed are incredibly
disappointing.  But here's another weird one: I don't care.

I used to get all worked up about it.  I can think back to 1995-1996 when I
would browse all the new sets on Lou Zucaro's Pause site after reading about
then on rec.toys.lego and saying "Man, Lego is starting to get worse and
worse!"  In retrospect, I'd probably kill for almost all of the sets in
comparison to what's being offered now.  Ick.  I recently took out my 4021
from the shelf where it was sitting, and realized just how cool it was.  And
it wasn't even cool in comparison to the stuff from the 80's or early 90's.

But you know, I just can't find it in myself to get worked up.*  I only have
one big wish this year, and that's for the 3033 tub or something similar to
return.  There's more coworkers to make mosaics of, more buildings to
construct in my town, more stuff overall.  Sigh.  I can't believe it's 2002
and the best I can wish for is basic buckets.

(...) I find that too, I'm often analyzing what sets make sense to buy for parts and then timing my purchases with the sales and clearance. I'm probably well overstocked anyways for pieces, I have like six tubs still unopened and two or three tubs (...) (23 years ago, 14-Feb-02, to lugnet.org.ca.rtltoronto)
