I have never seen that particular crown gear before.

I've been in Technic since my go-cart circa 1979 and have a variety of
different crown gears (including the black ones from early 80's) but that
one is just weird.  It has this curvy surface that goes from the crown to
the axle, that gives the proper distance for the teeth meshing on the new
differential.  As well, as people have noted, the center protrusion of the
crown gear must have been removed for clearance of the differential.

Wow, I want one!!

I saw somewhere someone chopped the annoying centre protrusion off a crown

I don't think the person says anything about modifying his parts, but in
one of the pictures one can clearly see a crown gear driving a new-style
diff. Maybe older crown gears didnt have that thing sticking out?

So yes, that crown gear has had the boss (...) (23 years ago, 12-Feb-02, to lugnet.org.ca.rtltoronto)

(...) I'd guess he's cut off the centre protusion, and glued a 1/2 bush on the back to make up for the decreased stability. ROSCO (23 years ago, 12-Feb-02, to lugnet.org.ca.rtltoronto)
