I should let Iain break the news, BUT it looks like the place where Iain
works use stanchions every day.

And according to Iain, it looks like he will be able to bring them in.

YAY!!!! Iain!!!!

maybe just duct tape lines on the floor and a sign saying "Please stay
behind the line"?

I can tell you from experience that this just does not work. Humans as a
group need to be herded with physical barriers.  PERIOD!!  I've worked
many jobs where I had to deal with the public and the 2 things I have
learned about humanity:

1.  IF you put more then 2 people in a room that they do not own and
give them food and go away, when you come back you will find food
wrappers and remains everywhere but in the garbage.  without
exception!!!

2.  IF left to their own devices, humans will inch as close to what ever
it is they want to see or touch as they can.  Saying no only stops them
while you are looking directly at them.

these rules cross ALL  cultural and religious boundaries.

We need an arena like robot wars/battlebots :) maybe just duct tape lines on the floor and a sign saying "Please stay behind the line"? and of course, repeat that verbally every 5 minutes... Maybe lie some tables on their edges? but then people (...) (23 years ago, 17-Sep-01, to lugnet.org.ca.rtltoronto)
