This sounds like a very cool project, and it would make a great display, but not a
good competition.

The problem is Wayne's module depends on both Ka-On's AND David's module.  If either
doesn't work, the whole thing doesn't work.

It would be very nice to see something like that at a train or hobby show, but
generally the whole thing would need to be assembled and tested before the event.

GBC I think is a clever idea, from an organizer standpoint:  It allows people to
be very creative in different dimensions and involves participants not normally
interested in Technic/Mindstorms.  A castle or space fan could build a cool
space elevator or castle tower, and be encouraged to figure out how to
articulate or mechanize it.  The prizes arrangement suggested by Steve also
allows encouragement and highlighting of different people not normally in the
spotlight.  This is a very good thing.

If we approach GBC, it should probably be run parallel at a train show.  If only
for the fact that it's primarily a display, which a train show gets thousands of
people to view.  That and there always seems to be some open stretch at a
layout.  That said, it might be better just to show up at BF, whenever and
whereever that is this year.

Car- or Duck-Assembly is not a competition, agreed.  It has to be a personal
showcase project between interested parties.  Hobby show defintely for final
display, but probably a few get togethers somewhere to iron out all the
problems.

That all said, I personally am not really that interested in GBC.  I'd be
certainly more interested in a large scale, non adhoc project like Assembly than
GBC, mainly because it models a real world process and I think I'd have more to
learn from Iain, Rob and Wayne.  I'd definetly have to have a generic work cell
design to start from.  The idea of Lego assembling itself is also pretty cool,
albeit a little creepy.

(...) From our initial test, there is one thing I can tell you. It doesn't really have to be a "display". We sat there and watched it run (on and off) for about 7 hours, and we didn't get tired of watching it. It's not like watching an event over (...)
