Isn't this pretty much the same as a tripod stand for a projector screen?

<http://images.google.com/images?q=tripod%20projector%20screen&hl=en&lr=&sa=N&tab=wi>

which seem to retail for 100-200USD, brand new, with the screen.

Someone must have an old one from home movies stuck in their garage
that the stand could be liberated from.  Or at a school...I know they
are almost 100% using VCR's now rather than projectors...

Actually, yes, it's pretty similar.  The nice ones have the rollup mechanism in
the base.  Those are above $1K each (a killing!)

I'm not even asking for that much, I just want a pole with two sticks at each
end.  If someone can hacksaw a tripod projector screen down to size (~24" wide)
then that would be even better.

I just don't want to destroy a perfectly good projector screen because those are
useful now that LCD projectors are becoming popular for home theatre use.
